THE GRACE YEAR by Kim Liggett

Thank you to the publisher and Libro.fm for the opportunity to listen to this book ahead of publication date. This story was well-written and forward-thinking. It was a tale of women empowerment, but also showed that a woman’s strength is not diminished just because she has men in her life. It is a coming-of-age story in the most literal, and yet most unique, way. I was actually on the edge of my seat for the full 11 hours I listened to this. So much so that I sat in my 90 degree car for an hour listening to this one night, sweat pouring down my face, because I couldn’t be bothered to hit pause for one minute to walk inside. If you liked Hunger Games and The Handmaid’s Tale and Lord of the Flies – this is for you. If you like YA dystopian novels in general, this is for you. If you need something easy and thrilling and insightful, this is for you.

I will say, however, that this book is dark and unnerving at times. I don’t think it should have been marketed as young adult. While ultimately a feminist story, the violence against women and children here is prevalent. My overall content warning is that this book is graphic in the way women are treated in this world (hangings, being skinning alived, etc.) Check out full content warnings at https://www.doesthedogdie.com/media/20761
